In this day and age of information technology and the prevalence of technological products all around us, we take all that for granted. For example, consider the streetlights that light up the roads after the sun goes down. We take that for granted because we’ve been familiar with streetlights ever since we were born.

But in reality, these things matter a lot. The electric light bulb was invented by Thomas Edison, among many other inventions of his. The invention of the light bulb changed the world forever as people no longer had to rely on candles to light up their homes and rooms after sunset. They could simply use these electric lights and not worry about candles melting down and burning anything.

The point of the above was to explain how important a source of light is and how knowing how to make a candle at home by yourself can be an invaluable piece of knowledge that you can utilize during any blackouts or unavailability of electric light for any other reason.

Apart from using candles as light sources in blackouts and other emergencies, you can also use candles to make some occasion appear to be more significant and emotionally relevant. For example, you can use your home made candles as lighting for a romantic candlelit dinner with your significant other.

What you will need to make candles

  • Spears made out of wood
  • Nylon stockings
  • Candle wax
  • Wicks
  • Molds
  • Dyes
  • Scents
  • Sprays
  • Pot holders
  • Two boilers or boiling pots, one small and one big
  • Scissors
  • Wooden spoons
  • Fire extinguishers

Instructions

Take the big boiler and place it on the stove. Put some water in it and let it heat up until it is boiling. Ensure that the level of the water in the pot is not higher than 2 inches.

When you notice that the water has started to boil, carefully place the smaller boiler pot inside the boiling water. If the water in the bigger pot is evaporating, you can add in more warm water to replace it.

Now take the block of wax that was mentioned as one of the things needed to make these candles and place it inside the smaller pot. The wax will start to melt because of the heat of the boiling water. Let it melt.

Once the wax has fully melted, use a wooden spoon to stir it around, taking care that the spoon does not catch on fire. Once the wax has beeen fully melted, turn off the stove.

Now remove the larger pot without removing the smaller pot from inside it. Now mix in the scents, dyes and sprays into the melted wax. Add these things quickly before the wax starts to cool and harden.

You should have your molds ready by now. You can prepare the molds beforehand by putting old nylon stockings inside them and putting the wicks right in the center.

Now, carefully pour the melted wax into the molds. Be careful and try not to drip any of the wax onto yourself, as it can be very hot at this point. After you have filled up all the molds with wax, place them inside the refrigerator and allow them to cool down and harden up.

Once they have hardened and cooled, take the candles out of their molds and store them away for a rainy day when you may need to use them. Keep in mind that you can make the molds in any shape you can find or desire. You can use water glasses or other bottles or cups to make candles of any shape.
