How to Make the Best Flaky Pie Crust

There is little doubt that getting a ready made frozen pie crust from your nearest grocery store is the practical way to make a pie quickly and without too much hassle. however, it can never compare with homemade pie crusts which are much more tastier than anything you can buy at the store, because you can make it out of your favorite ingredients.

It might sound difficult to make to pie along with its crust at home, but read on to learn how you can easily do it. All you need are a few easy to get ingredients and follow some simple instructions.

  • Utensils needed: a mixing bowl, a pie plate, some plastic wrapping sheet and a 10 inch pie dish.


  • 1.75 cups of all purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons of granulated sugar
  • 3 quarters of a teaspoon of table salt
  • 6 tablespoons of cold and unsalted butter, sliced and diced into small pieces
  • 1 quarter cup for shortening
  • 7 to 8 tablespoons of ice water


Take the 1 and 3 quarters of the all-purpose flour in a large mixing bowl and also put in 2 teaspoons of granulated sugar over the surface. On top of that, pour in 3 quarters of a teaspoon of table salt and mix it all well.

Next, take the 6 tablespoons soft diced and cold unsalted butter and add it to the mixing bowl. Use one of your hands (preferably wearing cooking gloves) to mix and stir the ingredients together until the butter cubes are coated from all sides.

Use your forefingers and thumb to gently rub against the coated butter so that it becomes a part of the mixture of flour. Keep on rubbing it with your hand until it changes into bean sized pieces that come together perfectly in their 3/4ths sized clumps when they are pressed tightly in your palm.

Next, add a quarter cup of shortening and stir and mix it well. Keep on rubbing and mixing the shortening with the mixture of flour for 2 or 3 minutes until it has become the size of little pea sized pieces.

Take half a cup of ice water and using your fingers, rake them through the butter and flour mixture to make it slightly moist. Slowly pour the rest of the ice water onto the mixture, one tablespoon at a time and use your fingers to rub the mixture until it has become a messy dough form.

For the next step, thoroughly knead the dough for 5 to 8 minutes and make it into the shape of a round ball on one hemisphere. Next, take a plastic wraping sheet and spread it flat on a smooth surface, and put the ball of dough on it.

Now completely cover the dough with the wrapping sheet and firmly press it down into a flat and round shape. Once it has become a round and flat disc, cover it all up with the plastic wrapping paper.

Now take the plastic wrapped dough and place it inside your refrigerator and let it cool for around 30 to 40 minutes. After the time has elapsed, take out the dough and carefully unwrap the plastic from it. Try to knead and roll it in such a way that you make it into the shape of a pie crust.

Now shift all this onto a large pie plate or dish and make sure that its shape is not disturbed while moving it.

The last step is to simply add in your favorite pie ingredients onto the crust and then back it as you would bake any other pie. Enjoy the delicious home-made pie!
